You can also say “Alexa, add carrots, onions and garlic to my shopping list” – you don’t have to have to make a request for each individual item. It’s also possible to add to the list in the Alexa app, but it’s in the app where it’s most convenient to see the whole list rather than asking “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?” and waiting for her to read through it, though that is certainly convenient if you need a hands-free (or eyes-free) alternative. You can use the list in the app when you’re out shopping, but if you need to, you can share your list with someone else, either via Alexa or in the Alexa app. Here, we’ll explain both methods.

How to share your shopping list via Alexa

The process is as simple as you might hope, although in order for it to work, you must have first created or imported contacts in the Alexa app. Also, the person must have the Alexa app as well.  To add contacts, open the Alexa app, tap on Communicate, then tap the people icon at the top. You can then import contacts, edit existing contacts, search and more.  To share your shopping list just say “Alexa, share my shopping list” and she will ask who you want to share it with. Say the name of the contact, and that’s it: she’ll send the list. This works on all Echo devices as well as in the Alexa app. The other person will receive it in their Alexa app in the Communicate tab.

So, open the Alexa app and tap More. Tap on Lists & Notes. Tap on Shopping (or whatever you’ve named your list – you can have multiple lists).

Tap Share and then choose the app to share it with. The apps you see will vary depending on what’s installed on your phone, and whether you’re using an iPhone or Android. On an iPhone, recent contacts will appear above the list of apps, so you may be able to tap on a person without selecting an app.

If you have to choose an app, select the contact to share the list with, and follow the on-screen instructions, which will again vary from app to app. In WhatsApp, for example, you choose the contact, then tap Next, then you can add a message or simply tap Send. Similarly, you can send the list via SMS by picking your phone’s messaging app from the share panel. On iPhones, you can also choose iMessage.
