So, what are fans of Fortnite supposed to do until then? It may not be Fortnite, but there’s a wealth of Battle Royale games available to download on Google Play. Admittedly, not all Battle Royale games are created equal, so we decided to jump into a few of the alternatives to see what the fuss is about. After hours of gaming, here’s our best Fortnite alternatives for Android.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
Of course, one of Fortnite’s biggest rivals on both mobile and PC is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG as it’s better known. The game launched back in 2017 and quickly rose to the top of the Steam charts, and over the months, PUBG was subsequently released on more and more platforms. As well as PC, it’s now also available to play on Xbox One, iOS and Android. There are small changes to the mobile variant of the game that’ll make it easier for touchscreen users (auto equipping applicable equipment and auto sprinting are good examples of this), but it still keeps that PUBG feeling. It’s also, in our opinion, much easier to unlock cosmetic items on mobile than it is on PC. Of course, you can’t craft like you can in Android, but if you’re looking for a polished BR game to tide you over until Fortnite’s period of Samsung exclusivity is over, PUBG is the best choice.
Rules of Survival
While there’s no PC or console port of Rules of Survival, the game has steadily rose in popularity since its introduction to the App Store and Google Play in 2017, now boasting over 150 million players. This is, in part, because apps for more popular BR games haven’t been available on mobile until recently, but to give Rules of Survival kudos where kudos is deserved, it’s actually pretty good. The concept is similar to other Battle Royale games, but more extreme. Instead of dropping into a 100-player match like with Fortnite, Rules of Survival offers a 300-player Battle Royale set in an 8km x 8km map with dynamic weather conditions. If that’s a bit hectic, the shooter also offers solo and team play in a smaller 120-player battle. There’s a wide range of weapons and accessories to find, and vehicles to help you get around the huge map too.
Grand Battle Royale
If you’re a fan of classic 8-bit gameplay, then Grand Battle Royale is the BR game for you. While the game may look more basic than the likes of Fortnite and PUBG, there’s a simple charm to Grand Battle Royale. The premise is pretty standard; you drop into a map, scavenge to find increasingly crazy weapons, materials for crafting and healthkits, and take down every player you see. The battles aren’t as tense as those on other BR games, partly due to relatively small matches. You’ll generally get put in a match with around 20 players, compared to 100+ on other games in our roundup. This makes matches shorter, while also giving you more room to explore and scavenge without bumping into too many players. The developers are constantly adding new weapons, items and skins, so even if you’ve played it in the past, there’s a good chance that you’ll have a completely different experience if you re-download and play it again.
Battlelands Royale
While most of the games in our roundup are broadly the same, Battlelands Royale wants to offer a twist on the traditional Battle Royale game. How? It’s mainly down to perspective. While many BR games are first- or third-person, Battlelands Royale uses a top-down view, providing a birds-eye view of the battlefield. This, combined with the cartoon-y design, easy-to-use controls and a variety of weapons to find provide something a little different to the standard Battle Royale. Like Grand Battle Royale, Battlelands Royale offers smaller matches (up to 32 people in a single match) that’ll only last a few minutes, the perfect length of time to play on a mobile. You can camp, hide in tall grass or ambush your enemies with a powerful minigun – it’s completely up to you how you win, just make sure that you do.
Survivor Royale
Created by the company behind Rules of Survival, Survivor Royale offers a slightly different experience to the best-selling mobile Battle Royale game. The matches are capped at 100 players for a more traditional experience that the developers claim lasts around 20 minutes. And, unlike most of the other games on our list, a huge part of Survivor Royale takes place at sea in speedboats, ports and on ships. It’s a different backdrop to what most people are used to, and offers a different set of challenges to land-based Battle Royale games. Apart from the map, the game features a wide range of weapons, attachments and vehicles to keep you occupied. With a map that looks this good, you’d be crazy not to give Survivor Royale a go.
